Hi. As everyone knows, Mac Mini 2018 is here and is user upgradeable, pew!!.
The new Mac mini base model seems a bit weak, but then again, its a Cofee Lake CPU and 3.6 ghz with 4 cores and should at least be faster than my Mac mini 2011, core i5 2.3ghz dualcore CPU machine!. No Hyper threading in Intel CPU!!?, well acording to some web pages, intel is going away from Hyper threading, because the newest Intel 8th - 9th generation of CPU’s has more cores, more core is better than HT, Intel newest CPU has bigger cache, higher CPU clock speed, that will make the new CPU much faster, and there is no need for HT, atleast not in all Intel’s CPU. The new graphicscard in the Mac mini 2018 is not much to talk about, but at least is should be faster than the Intel HD3000. With four USB-C and two USB 3.0 connection and a 128gb PCIe SSD, Mac mini 2018 is quite powerfull computer. Throw in 16-32 DDR4 ram (which is faster than the Mac mini 2011 DDR3 1333ghz), and buy that Thunderbolt external 512-1tb SSD, this would be a very interesting Mac mini, maybe not a Imac pro or a High end core i9 etc, but a Mac mini, powerfull enough to run Photoshop, after effects, blender (execpt there is no decent GPU in Mac mini 2018), , Logic Pro, Omnisphere 2.5, Halion 6 etc..... We will not forget the T2 chip, in the new Mac mini, quite a powerhouse, the T2 should take the burden of the cpu / graphicscard when dealing with H.265 / HEVC video compression format. If the External GPU ever comes down in price and getting faster, i am guessing the bottleneck is the transfer rate of the thunderbolt vs internal PCIe graphicscard!. Apple has done a great job this time, execpt, it is more diffcult to install ram. The new Mac mini 2018 is quite expensive compare to the old Mac mini 2011, unfortunly. It get worse, if you look at the Apple Mini 2018 price in US, the price is lower than the price in EU, there is a big different in prices , compare to the US and European country. That’s because of the EU taxes!. That mean’s every thing we do, buying product on internet, software or hardware, we get punished by EU, infact i dislike the European Union, i really hate EU, because of their behavoir, taxes etc... Talking about the Mac mini 2014, what Apple did with the Mac mini 2014, Soldering the ram to the motherboard, so that you cant upgrade the ram, is frankly very rude and a bad decisions. With that in mind and a whole lot more , IOS suffering from bugs , so many bugs has found its way into the IOS operation system, one after another, people really getting tired of Apple. Now. don’t get me wrong, i have been happy with Apple since my Iphone 5. When Steve was around, Apple company really took a right direction. The mac mini was cheaper, it could be upgradeable with both ram and hdd. Now that Steve is gone, my opinion is, Apple company has taking a different direction, leading to abandoning the mac mini product line for several years, concentrating only on Iphone and Ipad. Now things is different, after Apple has released the Mac mini 2018 etc, The Mac mini 2018 can be upgraded at purchase time, and choosing a Mac mini with 32gb ram, 1tb SSD, core i7 , the cost will be a couple of thousind of $$$, if you are willing to pay that much. outrageous!!!. i am going to stick with apple products for while, and perhaps i will buy Mac mini 2018 base model, next year upgrading the ram etc, install all my EWQL product!. I know i am sounding negative, but there is allso plenty of good things happening with Apple, thats a good thing and a very important. |

Writing here as a guy who hasn't touched a Mac in two years ...
The Mac prices are what honestly always made me turn back to Windows. The usability between systems and the comfort of upgrading the software is absolutely great, however, the current later models seem to be catering to "average" consumers, and not what you'd be needing for high-end DAW work (e.g. multiple drives, lots of RAM etc.). The lacking options to upgrade the hardware after the initial purchase is also rather problematic. Especially if you live in a place where there's no Apple Store or Genius bar. Many of my friends (and a few forum users, too, as far as I've been reading) have gone down the route of using a cheap Mac from a few generations back, and then using it as a master in combination with WIN slaves and VEPro 6.

Thanks LMW.
You could’nt be more right. Mac’s are expensive. Upgrading the Mac is problematic, because you dont wants to get stuck with a outdated mac system, which is impossible to upgrade. The good thing is, you can upgrade the memory in Mac mini 2018 youself, but rather diffcult to do, you’ve have to disassemble the Mac mini 2018, in order to install ddr4 memory. It seems that Apple doesn't want the buyers to upgrade the Mac mini. When i bought my Mac mini 2011, i did purchase my DDR3 ram from a PC shop very cheap, and it was very easy to install the memory in Mac mini 2011. I am considering installing a 1tb SSD in my Mac mini 2011, it shouldnt be that diffcult. I only want to use my Mac mini 2011 for Xcode, blender and cubase for small music project. If i buy the new Mac mini 2018, i want to use this mac mini for more powerfull task, cubase and lots of vst virtual instrument(even my Mac mini 2018 could handle omnisphere 2!). For complicated music project, i tend to use my Core i7 pc with 1tb SSD. |

Seems promising. I love Mac but it's so expensive. I can't even tell you how many chargers I already went through. Moreover, they are selling a brand mainly and not a product.

I was a Mac convert back in 2013, when I bought a top-spec'd MB Pro for a project I was working on. It was pricey at the time, but it has never let me down since....I mean never. Whether connected to my Windows slave, or using on its own, it's a rock (and has pulled through reliably for hundreds of projects). For how long? Who knows, but for the $3k I paid, it has far surpassed it's initial price-tag. Sure, a Mac costs more out of the gate, but in the long run it's probably cheaper when you factor in reliability, peace of mind, and not having to pay for Logic pro upgrades (if you use Logic). I'll probably upgrade to a newer Mac within the next year, but I'm waiting to see what the new Mac Pro's will have to offer. In the 20+ years I spent on PC, there were ALWAYS issues of some sort, including internal component failures. Not saying Mac is immune from this, but in my experience PC's are prone to such.

Funnily enough, my own workstation still works fine after four years of use.
I've never had any issues (apart from that one time I installed a corrupt beta file). It's rocksolid and apart from cleaning the filter I've never had to do anything with it. The reliability and compatibility of a Mac is definitely great, though I've always wondered how the PC systems seem to be so prone to faults - which I've never personally had. ![]()

I have been with the PC since , hmmm
1995. Cubase still crashing on my PC, Core i7 2600k. I have installed 24gb ddr ram on this selfbuild pc. I am using windows 7 64bit. Halion 6 allso crashing, its dosent ocur whole time, just once a while, it crashes. PC has allways been problematic to me, you get virus if you are not carefull. Because i sometimes download freeware, opensource, and no i am not one of those people going to pirate bay, i buy all my software and i am only using opensource software, like Blender. And Black Magic Design Fusion, which is not opensource, i think, but atleast is free!. With Mac i dont have any sort of these problems at all, only rarely apps is crashing on my mac mini. cubase , blender, halion, omnisphere just works. A true anti stress computer environment. I love pc, so many software programs for the pc, i am not fan Mac, i just like less complicated things.

Halion only crashes, if i load to many
instrument patches too quickly, same with omnisphere 2.5!. Apart from that, my pc is working fine. A pc selfbuild with the best quality component can cost as much as a new Mac.
