Default What orchestral sample libraries are for

I know that the vast majority of people who use libraries such as HO are writing music for media, film etc. but how many people use such libraries for 'recording' music that is not for any media but just written for its own sake? How suitable is HO for producing a final product for release as a recording in its own right? This is something I've been wondering about for a while and I just read a post here where someone stated that orchestral sample libraries are designed mostly for movie scoring purposes so it got me thinking again. For those of us who don't write for media but cannot afford to hire a real orchestra, sample libraries such as HO are a godsend. However how suitable are they really for non-media music?

Just wondering what people think.

Those people are full of baloney. You can use them for whatever you want. In addition to composing for media (film, tv, theater), I write for personal reasons as well...I actually have a large catalogue of orchestral material I've written over the years that simply gave me an outlet of expression. Sometimes I dig through them to find inspiration for a new project I'm working on, and often find ideas that I completely forgot about.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't release some work as it's own entity. Why not? There are no rules.

And not even reserved to orchestral!

I've used EW and other "orchestral" developers for non-media/personal songs outside the orchestral realm, including electronic pop covers and post-rock tracks and they have always worked great

I mean, if I throw on a giant 30 second long reverb on some strings and it compliments a synth pad in an electronic song...then I'll do it! (if it sounds good of course )

Thanks guys. Yes of course you're both right. I'm just so used to hearing about sampled orchestral libraries in the context of film, games etc. and almost never in relation to non-media music that I wonder sometimes how many other people are using them that way. It's obvious when you both spell it out but it's also reassuring somehow. I clearly need to get out more!

I don't write for media at all these days, though I have done some theatre work and other things in the past. The project I'm working on now, a suite for orchestra, guitars and electronics is intended for release in its own right. I also hope to perform it with a band playing the guitar/electronics side of things and the orchestral part on a backing track, unless I win the lottery and can afford to get a real orchestra to sit in on those gigs! That's the plan anyway. Gotta write the rest of the music and do the 'mockups' (hate that term) first though. Takes me ages..
