Dear EastWest users,
Another hardware question here! I have the opportunity to upgrade my PC with a budget around 1200€/$ but I would like to be sure the investment will bring significant improvements. Here is what I have today: - [CPU] i7-860 (bought in 2010) - [RAM] 16GB DDR3 (can't go further) - [HDD] 1TB Seagate 7200RPM -> for almost everything: Windows 10, Cubase Artist 9 (just did the upgrade from Cubase Studio 5!) and my good old EWQL libraries: Symphonic Orchestra, Choirs, VOP, Goliath... - [SSD] Crucial 480GB -> for Hollywood Strings Diamond - [SSD] Crucial 240GB -> for Hollywood Brass Diamond I know, there is no logic here: the operating system and the DAW should be on SSD... So I envisage now to refresh my configuration as following: - [CPU] i7-6700 Skylake (+ a new motherboard) - [RAM] 64GB DDR4 - [SSD] Samsung 850 Evo 500GB -> for W10, Cubase and "good old EWQL libraries" - [SSD] Crucial 480GB -> for Hollywood Strings Diamond - [SSD] Crucial 240GB -> for Hollywood Brass Diamond - [HDD] 1TB Seagate 7200RPM -> for project files and the rest of the world Would you do something different? Can I expect major improvements with these modifications? And according to you guys, would it be comfortable enough to work with a big "Hollywood" template without freezing anything? Thanks in advance for your feedback! ![]() Cheers, Kyrios

As for a large template without freezing - I can't be absolutely sure as I haven't got that system and Hollywood Strings Diamond is a beast. My guess is taht you will be able to run a hell of a lot. I can say the single best thing I did was build a slave computer and buy VE Pro. It offloads the major lifting to a separate, dedicated computer. What is your audio interface? |

To add to what Richard said (which is great advice), there's no guarantee you have a "worry-free" system, as there are so many factors with every setup. In theory, you will have a strong machine, as your specs are really good. Also, I would place those "good old EWQL libraries" on a drive other than Windows as well.

Many thanks for your answers, guys. Much appreciated!
@trumpoz > I didn't know VE Pro. Just checked it out on their website. Sounds promising. Another thing to think about, thanks! My audio interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Any opinion about it? @jspencer > thank you for your message. It would be wise to separate the libraries and the OS, indeed. I will think about it as well. Cheers!
