Default How to optimise sample drive

Over the years I have allowed the (2nd internal) hard drive on which I store all my samples to fill up beyond the recommended 70%. Today I freed up about 30 GB by moving one library which I rarely use. I am wondering is it enough to have freed up that space or should I optimise the drive by re-formatting it? That would involve copying all the existing files to another location and then putting them back - a big job - but would it be best to do that in order to make sure that the data is contiguous?

When I was using a HDD I kept them under 70% since they do slow down seek time wise as they fill up. I also format them to 64kb sector size over the standard Windows default 4kb size as it decreases I/O (Input/Output) cycles. I also set them to "Read Only". It may also make sense to copy the most demanding libraries first.

Thanks for that. In fact we talked about this in another thread a long time ago but the conclusion as to the necessity of actually re-formatting the drive was a little inconclusive. So I wondered what people would think about this nowadays, i.e. the need to re-format vs. simply freeing up space by deleting or moving but leaving things be otherwise. If it is advisable to re-format, I'm on a mac so specifying the sector size isn't possible afaik.

Small gains I'm sure, but sometimes the little things add up when things are on the edge. Makes me glad I went to SSD's which I also formatted to 64kb since I had the option, and ended up using my old HHD's as back-ups.

That's what I'm wondering - if the gain would be too small to warrant the hassle of re-formatting.

I've found with the fifth iteration of Play that things are working better generally, including much faster loading times even from HDD.
