Default External SSD Builds?

I have a Mac Pro 2013, and I have my EW Libraries on a couple of drives, 1 3TB Lacie HDD and 1 Samsung T3 SSD. But Now I need more space and want to go full SSD...but $400 per 1TB external SSD adds up. So...

I came across an article about building your own EXTERNAL SSD, The SSD: SanDisk Ultra II 960GB SATA III 2.5-Inch 7mm Height Solid State, The Enclosure: Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive.

So I was wondering if anyone here had any advice or personal experience with this type of custom EXTERNAL SSD set up. Or maybe this is common and I have been to domesticated by Apple in my allegiance to the Mac OS platform.

Thank you in advance!

My main worry would be that the data has to be first transferred from the SSD
to the Enclosure and from there to the computer. That's a two time transfer.
This would then result in lower read speeds - something that is absolutely
ill-suited for DAW / VST work.

Concerning prices ... A 850 EVO costs $136 + Enclosure $10 = $146.

The Samsung T5 500GB is on discount atm, costing only $149.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

I'm going to try that Samsung model. Just ordered two for all my EWQL libraries! They've been on my glyph drives a little while and I just don't want to chance losing it all and dealing with the replacement hassle AFTER a problem! Thanks for the heads up and I'll post how things go!

Yeah, I've got the Samsung T1 myself and its simply brilliant for samples.
I don't stream Hollywood off of it, but it manages everything else nicely!

Thanks to Lorenz' advice, I picked up a 500GB Samsung T5 on sale last week. I have it connected to one of my my MacBook Pro's USB3 ports....and it is fantastic; super fast and it's very tiny. I'm actually going to run a few tests this week, I may be able to get away with not using the slave as much.

SSD drives arrived today. Will be transferring just under a TB of samples this week.
