Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm just finishing out that video you posted Shane and it's super helpful. Also, congrats on your system working so well for you! Sounds bloody fantastic.

He did indeed mean the dual core Xeons, but I'm leaning towards that 10 core i7 to be honest. It only takes the build a couple of hundred over budget, so I'm thinking it could indeed be worth it.

Regarding the specs on this slave, is it necessary to get any kind of internal soundcard for it even if VEP is transferring everything to the iMac (which has an external interface)?

Thanks again,
Tom

You don't need a soundcard, it all goes through your iMac interface.

Looks like 4.2-4.3Ghz is the average sweet spot for Overclocking the 10 core.
Of course not all chip samples are the same, so it's a crap shoot as to achieving even higher frequency levels. Personally I prefer Air Cooling and there's some monster Air Coolers available now with massive heat sinks.

With a computer system at these levels you likely could do it all with just the one system.

Thanks guys, much food for thought. There's another potential upgrade which is adding in an M2 NVMe SSD - anyone know whether that yields improved results for VIs or if that's just a wasted expensive?

Samsung 960 PRO
Wow! If used as a Samples Drive.
Since it reads at multiples of a SATA drive I can't see why it would not be a performance boost when pushing things to the edge.
Future so bright, gotta wear shades!

Any thoughts about the new Ryzen processors by AMD? How would you estimate the benefit of the Ryzen 7 1800X with 8 cores/ 16 Threads?

I remember I exported/ played back a pretty large score (Jurassic Park) using Sibelius with the Hollywood series on my i5-3570 @ 3.4-3.8 GHz getting a high cpu usage and some stuttering. Do you think that this would be solved by switching to the new AMD CPUs?

I've heard the Ryzen's are pretty good, but they only support 64GB of RAM. (This is the extent of my knowledge on the matter).

Looks like it will give Intel a run for the money, and help drive down CPU costs overall which will be good. Going from a i5 to a 8 core with higher clock speeds would yield a massive increase in performance.
