Default Upgrading from 2011 MacBook Pro

Hey all. Here's my current set up:
  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011
  • 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
  • 8 GB RAM
  • OSX 10.9.5
  • Pro Tools 11
  • Sibelius 7.5
  • East West Hollywood Orchestra Diamond
  • Axe FX II XL+ (guitar effects processor & audio interface)
  • PreSonus Audiobox USB 96
  • KRK Monitors
  • Dual LG Display Monitors

I write/record orchestral rock and do midi score mockups, so I need a system that can handle large templates. My budget is $1500-$2500.

Looking for a desktop, not laptop. I'd prefer to stick with Mac, as that's what I am comfortable with; however, I am open to a PC build. I don't have building experience, but I have a friend (experienced builder) who has offered to help and I am willing to learn the ropes. Not interested in a Hackintosh.

Here are two options I've been considering:

PC Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y2nkgw
$1780

2012 Mac Pro: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mid-2012-Ma...LH_TitleDesc=0
$1679

If going PC, I will need to see if PT 11 and Sib 7.5 play well with Windows 10. If not, software upgrades will be needed. If going MP, I will need to purchase another SSD for samples.

I'm all ears for suggestions. Thanks for your help!

Hey,

PT11 and Sibelius 7.5 work with WIN 10, also tested with Play.

Yeah, don't go the Hackintosh route. For DAW work, it's a large hassle.
And half of all problems you'd experience will be attributable to this.

Both systems look good ... with one small caveat. The RAM.
Your PC system is listed as DDR4-2666 (MHz), which is a lot
faster (has more bandwidth), than the DDR3-1333 (MHz)
which the MAC will hold.
For sample streaming, this is rather important, especially if
you have Hollywood Orchestra Diamond and other libraries
which have large sample sizes that need to be streamed.

In this case, I'd actually go to for the PC.

Jeez, I hate fine print. Further problems of the MAC:
- The ports are: USB 2.0 - 5x; no USB 3.0; Firewire 800 - 4x;
Gigabit Ethernet - 2x. Those are basically ... not that good.
What are the ports for the PC?
- 7200rpm HDD. This is rather slow for the HO-D.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that PT 11/Sib 7.5 are working with Windows 10 and good point about the RAM/ports. The PC has USB Type-C, 3.1 Gen 1 & 2, USB 2.0.

Alternately, see if you can find a 2013 trash can Mac, the Thunderbolt connectivity is awesome. What about an iMac?

Otherwise, that PC looks killer. I personally hate Win 10, but you definitely get more bang for the buck.

I haven't looked much into the iMac. Found a trashcan for a good price, but it sold the minute I looked away.

I agree the PC is a good build, but not crazy about switching OS, reformatting drives, etc.

Ok, if you're intending to stay with a MAC, I highly recommend looking
around for another configuration and especially noting the few points
I highlighted above: RAM, harddrive, ports.
