Default Insurmountable - Thematic/Epic

Hey EW

This is one of my first public releases made with a variety of EastWest instruments and i'd love to get some feedback if you get the time.

Insurmountable

Thank you very much.

Hello KadeJones

Good job on the composition ; very efficient and epic ! In some ways it makes me think of Trevor Morris's work with a touch of rock.
I would have loved to hear more lows and I think your compressor might be too tight (when the piece reaches its maximum velocity, there are some flutter effects left behind).

Which DAW do you use ?

Hey bloodcool. Thank you very much for the comparison, though i'm a long way from the sound of Trevor Morris yet.

I'm using Presonus Studio One Pro on the latest version. It does have a mastering suite as well as everything you'd expect for mixing - but it's all a learning curve to me as i compose more.

I am concsious of the lows in need of a boost and i'm working on it, so i'm glad you pointed that out. Compression is hard. Any advice?

Hey again KadeJones

Well it's quite hard to explain compression (and since I'm not a sound engineer it would look weird if I did but basically, when it comes to the master, the more transparent : the better.
You also might be careful with your master's loudness (before the mastering operations). It is generally better to work under -6dB or -3dB (the maximum peak your volume should reach, avoiding the 0dB limit before the mastering) if I remember correctly (but anybody who has something to say about it around here is more than welcome
For some instruments, you might want to enhance some sound properties, but it requires a lot of work, a lot of time spent on listening to other people's work as well as a laaarge amount of time spent on tutorials and lessons and personal tests.
This article is rather well done since it gives specific tips but it's in french (I was quite sure there was an english version somewhere...)

All the best to you !

Hi bloodcool

Thanks for the advice and the link - I'll be sure to check it out - even with googletranslate.

I made "Insurmountable" about 6 months or so ago and since then, I've been putting in many study hours with tutorials and such. Much of what you say rings true and I'm now more aware of gainstaging (the -6db or so mixing) as well as other usefull tips and tricks.

I'm working on a new composition right now and should be done in about 2 weeks (around my job). I'll post it here as i'd like your view on my progression. It's an adventure piece which should sound more powerful with more lows and variation.

Thanks again and loving "Ancient Gods - Aphordite" btw. I'll leave a comment.

KJ

Hello KJ

I'm glad if any of my advices could make any sense. I encounter the same things and find it useful to discuss about it.
Anyway, your musical work is really cool and I think it deserves to be heard in the best conditions.
Your work on emotions and narration is very well done.
I like the fact that your themes are intensely supported by interesting counterpoints and am currently listening to the work you posted on your Youtube channel : it's great !!
I subscribed and will be glad to listen to your next pieces

Best regards and thank you for your comment on Aphrodite's theme - I'll answer to it
