Default Sound Card Needed?

My current computer has the Intel i7 6700K, 16GB 3200 RAM, and the MSI Z170A Gaming M3. Will I need a audio card?

For my old computer I used a basic Sound Blaster Live audio card and Cakewalk X3 with EWQLSO worked well. I've been told my new set-up works at least as well as is compared to the previous 1 with the SB Live card.

Thanks.

In my experience (your mileage may vary ), an on-board sound card can be responsible for horrible latency. An ASIO audio interface isn't exactly expensive, and it usually works better than any non-ASIO solution.

Yes I second that. If you're serious at all get a separate audio interface.

Yep. Internal, not external.

Ah that's interesting Jeff. Could you explain why that's a better option?

I have a Metric Halo ULN-2 attached through firewire that does the job brilliantly with pristine sound quality, a bit old now but still excellent. Mac only though. I used to use a pro internal card when I had a PC.

If the OP doesnt need inputs then a good quality internal interface will do the trick. That is where a lot of the $$ are on interfaces - pre-amps.

Make sure to get an interface with good quality drivers.

Any suggestions on a low-ish cost sound card, considering I will have no external inputs. I'm guessing the SB Live 5.1 card i have is pathetic?

Forgot to add-the only issue I have had is, during play while in my DAW a note is on occasion skipped. Otherwise things run smoothly.

Thanks.

Esi Julia
2nd hand RME HDSP 3692 - brilliant but not cheap new.
M-Audio (if they have up to date drivers available)

All you need is an external interface connected to a USB port, it will be much cheaper than an internal card.
