Would be great for a compact noiseless NAS box.

Question about the 64k se- allocation units. Is that an EWQL recommendation specifically? From what I've been able to document so far, PLAY seems to make 32k requests.

I remember manually entering cylinder counts x_x

Only my recommendation, as a result of measuring transfer times of mixed file size copying between disks, but not as a result of measurements upon Play doing its stuff.

This really highlights how access to EW's telemetry data would help clear up a lot of these things that we keep churning through year after year in the dark!

A lot depends upon how Play 'requests' its data from the OS, but generally the OS should keep the 'unrequested' part of a sector in its buffers, until the next sequential request for the same file, unless there were too many other requests that the oldest filled buffers had to be reused for new data.

This would be similar to how the SSD keeps its native 256kB blocks in buffers, even though the OS only requests an allocation block worth.
