Default Load Time Issues With Samples on Windows 10

Good morning everyone,

When I built my own PC, I originally had an issue where Windows Defender was scanning every sample as it loaded and it made a reasonable orchestral template take a very long time to load - around 15 minutes, and this is with 64 GB of RAM and an 8-core processor. Lorenz from support helped me figure out that it was a Windows Defender issue, so I permanently disabled it by editing the registry.

Fast forward to now, over a year later, and suddenly it seems like the issue has returned. I have changed nothing, other than Windows 10 getting an update. The registry edit I made stayed the same, Windows Defender does not appear to be running, but I just timed my template load time and it was about 10 minutes, versus around 2-2.5 minutes at its best. This is a recent occurrence - I work on music at least every 2-3 days, and it's just happened suddenly in the last week - no gradual slowdown, nothing like that.

Does anyone have any info on what in the new Windows update might be causing this? I'm honestly at a loss - any info on where I can look or what settings to check on my PC that might be causing this issue again? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

-Brad

Hey Brad,

that's weird. Are you on Windows 10 1809 or 1903?

I haven't heard of anything in the recent Win updates slowing down
streaming speeds. Have you checked your startup processes, your
background programs, your security programs?

Basically, repeat the steps we went through last time. Is it still occurring?

Are you sure that Windows Defender is still excluding your sample libraries?

Hi Lorenz,

I'm on 1903. I checked and Windows Defender was still completely turned off via the registry, but I also turned it off the normal way. I ran Task Manager and viewed processes running while loading my template. Windows Defender did not seem to be running during this time.

I'm updating PLAY right now, but I can't imagine that's the issue. I'll restart the computer and try loading again and see if I can see what other processes are running that might be using up resources.

Looks like I may have figured out the issue. Something with the new update seemed to ignore my registry edit permanently disabling Windows Defender. I went in and specifically excluded all of my SSD's containing my samples from being scanned, and now my template just loaded in about 2 minutes. Thanks for the reminder to check EVERYTHING! You're the best!
