Default Dropouts/Issues even with robust setup

Hi folks,

I have an issue when trying to bounce tracks or export tracks, and sometimes with playback as well. I don't know if this is hardware, or software, but I'm hoping I include enough evidence that someone can help me.

Here's what I currently use (full specs in my signature block):
-iMac mid-2011 as host
-Logic Pro X as DAW
-Custom PC as a slave for sample libraries
-Vienna Ensemble Pro to connect everything

-Hollywood Orchestra (this is the library I'm using when problems start)
-All samples are on SSDs in the slave computer
-Project file is on a 10000 RPM Thunderbolt HDD connected to the iMac.

Issues:
1. During playback with large orchestra setups, I sometimes get light crackling.
2. During playback and with exported files, I often get a "skipping" sound at the end of a rendered file.
3. When bouncing in place/bouncing-and-replacing/exporting tracks, I frequently get instrument dropouts, abrupt cutoffs (for instance, a sustained string note will cut off BUT I still get the reverb trail from that improper cutoff), and the results are inconsistent - in other words, there is frequently a problem, but the problem does not manifest itself exactly the same way.

I am including a short example - 2 images, and a link to an unlisted Youtube video demonstrating what happens.

One image is 3 instances of me bouncing a 2-measure track (that's it, nothing else is on the track). It's the same MIDI region in both images - this one is using Play on the host computer with Symphonic Orchestra Platinum (and I get zero issues)

The other image is 3 instances of attempting to bounce the same 2-measure track using the full setup (Host-Slave-Hollywood Orchestra-VEP) where you can see that not only did each one bounce incorrectly, it wasn't even the same each time (evidenced by the obvious difference in the waveform)

The video is me showing first what it sounds like when I use the MIDI as-is (which works well) then what the issue sounds like when I bounce in place (which is totally messed up). Forgive my goofy speech, this was about 3 AM in the morning and I was barely awake - view it here: https://youtu.be/vKUvIoK2koc

I know there has to be someone on here who has dealt with it. Does anyone have any insight? Thank you in advance!

Does a realtime export through VEPro have the same issue?

Yes, I always bounce realtime vs. offline.

There were problems with offline bounces in the past. Bouncing in realtime should work with recent updates of VEP6. Can you check if you are up to date with Play and VEP6? Play is 6.1.2

Best

I'll check on that when I get home, but I am leaning towards it not being an issue with VEP or Play. My thought is that it's a processing power issue on the host side, considering that EWQLSO and other sample libraries run just fine, but HO does not always - and if that's the case, I'm wondering if it would be fixable by upgrading the host computer. Trying to get to a more definite or at least solid answer before spending thousands of dollars to upgrade though But I'll definitely make sure everything is up to date and then report back.

Something that is making this all a bit hard to understand is this:

1. Slave PC is very powerful - AMD Ryzen 2700X 8-core processor, several 1TB SSD's for the samples, 64 GB of RAM.

2. Host PC is solid, not as powerful - Quad Core 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, main HDD is 7200 RPM, 24 GB of RAM.

3. Using VEP to connect the two.

4. Using an Apogee Element 24 Thunderbolt audio interface for monitoring/audio output.

So this is the point where things become murky:

-If we're talking about the whole process of using samples with a host/slave setup, and I am running my resource-hungry samples on the above-mentioned slave PC, what is the role of the host computer in processing those samples? (i.e. is it basically just audio output at that point?) I think if someone can explain that one to me, I can limit my focus even more to find where the issue may lie.

-Could the Apogee Element 24 be adding some additional strain that could be resolved by taking it out of the mix? I don't know why it would, but it's a part of my setup I just remembered that I haven't mentioned thus far.

The drop outs in offline bounce were a known issue. VSL fixed something in Dezember 18. If you have both Play and VEP6 updated bouncing should work (both, offline and realtime). If you still have problems please let me know. I can have a look at your project file and see if it works on a test computer.

Thanks gerrit. Just to be clear, I haven't been using offline bounce, just realtime. But I'll make sure everything is updated, then give it another go with both methods. Thanks very much for your responses!
