Default Keeping the sample library on an external drive

Hey guys!

I'm getting a new sytem soon and based on the amount of memory a lot of these libraries take up I was wondering.

I know it's faster to run programs off of an SSD, so is it viable to run the Play VST on my SSD but keep the actual library (e.g. Hollywood Strings) on a HDD external drive?

Is that defeating the purpose of using an SSD to launch things quickly or would it run smoothly and pull the library into the VST well from an external drive?

Thanks all in advance!

Hey,

could you provide a bit more info on the drives you'll be using? Thanks.

What drives do you use? Do you have a dedicated setup with only samples on the sample drive? Important information would be
- the drive format (e.g. FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, Mac OS Journaled, AFPS)
- the drive speed (e.g. 5400/7200rpm / SSD)
- the drive connection (e.g. PCIe, SATA, Firewire, USB)
- the Sample Cache value which is available in Play > Settings > Streaming.
- Drive Capacity (in GB / GB used).

Please list that information for each of the drives which you use.
Drive OS:
Drive Samples:
Drive Projects:
Drive Other:

Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The external drive I'm looking into getting (TOSHIBA Canvio Slim External Hard Drive - 2 TB) is as follows:

Drive OS: Windows(NTFS), but will reformat to so it's also mac compatible
Drive Samples: unsure (on my current system the sample cache allows me to go up to 5 but was autoset to 3)
Drive Projects: Will be using this drive for samples and temp project storage
Drive Other: USB 3.0 connection, 5400rpm

And the system I'm going to be running as of right now drive wise will be:

Drive OS: Windows
Drive Samples: as above
Drive Projects: Hopefully program only with all projects being loaded from one drive, samples on another.
Drive Other: 512GB SSD (PCI-e)

Let me know if you need more/if I've misunderstood any of the info I was meant to give!

Thanks again!
