Default John Powell - Solo: A Star Wars Story - midi mockup versus real orchestra

Here's something to feast your eyes and ears on: a youtube video by John Powell with a very fast paced cue from Solo: A Star Wars Story, where he switches back and forth between the midi mockup and the final mix with live orchestra.

Listen to the video with your studio monitors or a decent pair of headphones.

Nothing will ever beat a live orchestra, but those are some rock solid midi programming skills, not to mention great compositional and orchestration skills.

John Powell has an excellent Youtube channel, by the way, with many more 'piano roll' examples of cues from recent movies (How to Train Your Dragon, Star Wars, etc.). Great resource.

Thank you for sharing Peter.
I agree, its an amazing mock up!
It took me some time to notice the changing “Demo/ Finale mix” :-).
I think the finale mix is more ambient and also with more Life.
But the mock up is so good, it could be listen to as “the real thing”.

Indeed. I saw it making the rounds on Facebook as well.
Amazing mock-up, really!

Didn't know he had a YT-channel. I'll need to check it out.

Enjoy your Sunday, guys.

Indeed he does, Jeremy. You'll find a picture of his template if you google it.

Here's an instagram picture of his Logic template. It's huge, hundreds of tracks combining various different libraries, all color coded to keep things organized.
